Quite. Though the point was about those in power rather than us riff raff. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

Understood, but how different are the riff raff from those in power?

You can bet when everyone agreed to this system, they didnt expect such an outcome! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif)

Most fans were moaning because they thought Braehead would win the league.

Fife in the playoffs would be amazing. Brings back great memories of Lynch's wonder goal and John Downes scoring right in front of me as Angry Armstrong and I were late leaving the bar for the start of the second.

Great stuff indeed. If only Check to the Head were still around to use your skills.

As briman pointed out, our tough guy usually has to take a regular shift, which leaves us short if they go fighting, either through sitting in the box, or back in the dressing room. Is that productive? Can we afford to have an enforcer who doesnt do anything else but fight? The reason we lose to these teams is, more often than not, because their depth is greater than ours. Its that simple.

I'm in total agreement. I crunched some numbers for about five seasons of the EIHL to see what factors contributed the most to success. After obvious things like goal difference, the strongest correlation was depth of scoring. Teams which relied on only a few players more often than not ended up at the foot of the table whilst those with all three lines pitching in were more likely to win the league. The correlation between wins and total penalty minutes was essentially negligible.

Just watched Guadalajara vs Cruz Azul in Estadio Omnilife, by far the most amazing stadium I've ever been in. Game was a bit pish until Azul got two guys sent off, one for something that wasn't even a foul and another a second yellow for diving. It was at the other end of the pitch though so not sure about it's legitimacy.

The game was sold out but about 25% of the stadium were Cruz Azul fans. I was sat wearing a Cruz Azul jersey next to Chivas fans and there were no problems at all, even when celebrating the goal. I was so surprised how ok everyone was with the fans mixing like that in the stands.

Saw Cruz Azul vs San Luis last night along with 20,000 people and one or two police. Pretty decent game breaking my run of eight games outside of Scotland without seeing the home club score!

Goals!

That free kick was a lot more sneaky than the replays suggest. It's not often you see one scored into the centre of the net.

One cool thing that they have going on is the referee carries a small can of spray paint. When there's a free kick he marches out the yards and draws a line where the wall can line up. It fades away after a few minutes.

Reckon Steff would have been a good player for this team

But would he be better than Leinweber or Patry? That's the real question that needs to be asked.

Just as there are the odd Allens and Robinsons amongst Christiansen/Neil's recruitment gold of Hurtibises and Hemingways, I have been known to propose a chant I think is amazing but turns out to be a dud ("Fear of the Clarke" being a notable example). This time though, I'm sure I've struck chant gold.

You can give him a break on this one though. "No team" would have beaten them? That's a ludicrous claim.

Oh for Moray Hanson-- firm even -handed and consistent---I'm not sure I saw any of that this season.

I'm not sure I saw any of that in Hanson's last few seasons.

I'm obviously disappointed at the result tonight, but I'm quite happy in general. Despite some enjoying painting the Caps' fanbase as the most negative and hard to please, when it comes to on the ice, the vast majority just want to see the team put in some effort. It appears that's what happened tonight.

People talk and think we've never been here before.

Serious question here, have you had a winding up order before? It may be the spin Tynecastle's putting on it, but this seems a bit more serious than anything in the Robinson era. I'm not a Hearts fan and my memory is shaky, but didn't he always have a fairly sound escape plan in case of serious trouble?

QUOTE (Scott-the-Cap @ Oct 28 2012, 02:23 ) *
What I don't understand is our lack of physical presence, if you look at pretty much any successful hockey team throughout the world they have a mix of Europeans & North Americans, the Europeans tend to bring the skill & scoring (jagr, kovlachuk, ovechkin, etc) & the North Americans have brought the grit & steel (iginla, bougaard, neill, etc) we have seem to have a really good crop of Europeans, but a poor group of North Americans, they can't score goals or points, but they can't add the steel/grit to allow our Europeans to score the goals/points. Most of the league seem to have the North American balance right, but can't get the skilful European balance right, whereas we seem to have the euro balance right, but can't get the easier North American/gritty balance, does this come down to North Americans demanding a higher wage (which I find doubtful as there is so many of them) or a lack of knowledge about the North American game or even a lack of understanding of the physical side of the game? (This I find hard to believe looking at the racers teams that Scott Neil played in over the years, they all seemed to have one stand out physical guy in them) This unfortunately is the catch 22 which until addressed will stop the capitals moving forward.

I don't think you can really simplify it to North Americans and Euros. They aren't two different species. In his first stint at the Caps, Peter Konder had far more grit and steel than Kaye and Saul. The most ruthless enforcer we ever had was from Sweden.

You can't simply look at the cover of someone's passport and know what sort of a player they are.

QUOTE (old time hockey @ Oct 8 2012, 19:22 ) *
Bring in some toughness please...

From what I saw yesterday lack of toughness isn't our problem, it's a lack of players who can do the basics correctly. Also, a lack of players who are on the same wavelength. It's not even a case of not being on the same wavelength, it seems some of our forwards are set to MW, some FM and others short wave. There's just no cohesion to the team and it really looks like they haven't been coached.
Bringing in a player who hits hard and forces turnovers isn't going to help much if the forwards struggle to move the puck or put decent shots on goal. I think it would be far more beneficial to the team if someone was brought in who can actually pass the puck with some regularity and knows where they should be positioned on the ice. And I don't care which country he comes from.
